To remember Sejong only as the king who created Hangul is to see only half of him. He was a man who simply could not bear that ordinary people, unable to read or write, were dying because they could not voice their own grievances. From the highest seat of power, he spent his life trying to open the mouths of the lowest. Before we ask what we can create from where we stand, we must first ask for whom we create it. Hangul has survived six hundred years not because of its precision, but because its starting point was a human being.
