Zhuangzi dreamed he was a butterfly, then woke and could not tell whether he was a man who had dreamed of being a butterfly or a butterfly now dreaming of being a man. The first time I read this, it felt like wordplay. But the longer I live, the more I understand: we are so certain of who we are that we close off our most important possibilities. Job, title, gender, age — perhaps all of it is only a brief dream we are having. Zhuangzi is the freest of men, the one who taught us how to hold that dream lightly.
