This is an anonymous Yuan-dynasty Chinese painting, holding the everyday life of a woman together with children. A scene of an unremarkable moment is drawn with warmth. In this humble scene I see the weight of an ordinary day. There is no grand event, but the very days of tending children and being at their side hold up a person's life. It is not only great achievements that hold meaning. The ordinary hours spent caring for someone were, looking back, the most precious ground of a life, and the painting says so quietly.
