당풍 산수도(倣唐山水圖)
🖼 ONE LINE FROM THIS PAINTING

"What is a painting drawn after the old Tang manner carrying on?"

📝ONGO's Reflection

This painting is a landscape drawn after the manner of old Tang painting. It came from the tradition of Chinese painting, yet learning and carrying on the way of a former age has everywhere been one path of study. I see here that to take after is not the same as to copy. To follow an old manner is not mere imitation but to retrace, with one's own hand, the height that one before had reached. In that process the old thing comes alive again through a new hand. Taking after is a beginning, not an end. Walking the road of those before, one finds, before long, a step of one's own.
