"What accord does a white heron beside the rose mallow reveal?"

📝ONGO's Reflection

This is a painting of rose mallow and white herons on silk by the Ming-dynasty Chinese painter Xiao Zeng. Beside the red-blooming mallow, a heron stands white and still. In this contrast I see the subtlety of accord. The lavish mallow and the plain heron differ, yet being together, each one's light grows clearer. When only like gathers with like, nothing stands out. Only when something different is at one's side does each one's grain come alive. Accord is not the becoming of sameness but the way difference makes each shine.
