Above five peaks the red sun and the white moon rise at once, while below, pines and waves answer each other in left and right symmetry. This screen, set behind the throne, painted an unchanging order that holds steady even as day and night turn endlessly into each other. I see in this painting that balance is not the removing of one side but the holding of two opposites in a single place. The sun and the moon do not quarrel; they share the same sky.
