Kim Hong-do, Samgongbulhwando

김홍도 삼공불환도(三公不換圖)
🖼 ONE LINE FROM THIS PAINTING

"Where lies that which one would not trade even for high office?"

📝ONGO's Reflection

This is Samgongbulhwando by Danwon Kim Hong-do, its title meaning that a life amid nature would not be traded even for the seats of the three highest ministers. Across the long surface, mountains and water, houses and the daily lives of people flow on peacefully. I feel this painting asking again about the measure of desire. In chasing ever higher seats, one easily passes by the quiet happiness underfoot. The peace one enjoys in the place one already holds is the precious thing hardest to trade for anything, and the painting tells us so quietly.
