This painting by Li Jian is one leaf among an album made of many sheets. It came from the tradition of Chinese literati painting, yet the fact that one single leaf is part of a larger binding gives anyone something to think on. I see here a single scene as a part. This painting is complete in itself, yet at the same time it is one page of a larger album. It is beautiful alone, but with the other leaves it forms yet another flow. A person's day is the same. A day is whole in itself, and at once one leaf in the long album of a lifetime. Single leaves gathered become a book.
