📜 THE VERSE

Fearlessness, purity of heart, standing firm in knowledge, giving and self-restraint, offering oneself in work, study and discipline, and uprightness — these are the marks of a bright nature.

❓ TODAY'S QUESTION

Do I mistake fearlessness for recklessness — where does true fearlessness come from?

📝Reflection

What the old teacher places first among the marks of a bright nature is, remarkably, 'fearlessness (abhaya).' This fearlessness is not recklessness but the steadiness that comes from purity of heart. Only one with nothing to hide is unafraid. When I conceal and pretend, I fear being found out; only when upright and honest is my heart light. This is why Gandhi so loved this verse, calling fearlessness 'the root of all virtue.' Giving, restraint, and study are flowers a fearless, clear heart blooms outward. The less I have to hide, the less I fear.
