땡전 한 푼
flat broke — not even the smallest coin to your name
From the dangbaekjeon (當百錢), a high-denomination coin minted by the Regent Heungseon Daewongun to fund the rebuilding of Gyeongbok Palace; despised after wrecking the economy, its name soured into ttaengjeon, a byword for worthless money.

Origin Story

Era
The years when Heungseon Daewongun was rebuilding Gyeongbok Palace

The ttaengjeon in the phrase "not a single ttaengjeon" traces back to the late Joseon era, when Heungseon Daewongun needed enormous sums to rebuild the fire-ravaged Gyeongbok Palace and minted a coin called the dangbaekjeon (當百錢). True to its name, it was supposed to be worth a hundred of the standard sangpyeong tongbo coins. In reality it was worth nowhere near that, and when so much new money was suddenly poured into circulation, prices soared while the currency's value collapsed. Households grew poorer, and a resentful public twisted "dangbaekjeon" into the harsher-sounding "ttangbaekjeon" as a sneer. That, in turn, was shortened and hardened into ttaengjeon. So the phrase "not a single ttaengjeon" carries the lingering bitterness of common people toward money that had lost its worth and earned their contempt.

The dangbaekjeon was such a failure that it was abolished barely six months after issue. It is a rare case in which the economic chaos of an entire era is etched into a single word, surviving to this day as the very emblem of "money not worth a thing."

Memory Hook

Remember that the coin minted to rebuild Gyeongbok Palace shook up prices so badly it was mocked from "ttangbaekjeon" down to "ttaengjeon."

"It was stamped with the worth of a hundred coins, yet the people called it ttaengjeon — worth nothing."
