Amid the breathless crush of competition, Laozi's words came to me like a cool sip of water. His teaching to lay down the forced striving to achieve and simply flow low like water disarms a mind worn ragged by compulsion. The philosophy that the highest good is like water quietly proves the paradoxical truth that suppleness overcomes rigidity and that emptiness is what gives a thing its use. Instead of fretting to fill myself, I learn to empty myself gladly.
