If Confucius's love is a graded love that begins with family and those closest to us, Mozi confronts this head-on and cries out for jian'ai, an impartial love without distinction. When I first encountered this thought, I marveled that anyone could, amid the blood-soaked chaos of the Spring and Autumn and Warring States era, espouse a pacifism so radical as to seem almost naive. In a daily life saturated with the exclusiveness of looking after one's own kind alone, Mozi's cry breaks my narrowness like a great hammer.
