When I first opened this novel, I smiled lightly at the thought that it was Pride and Prejudice in an Industrial Revolution version. But Gaskell's insight goes beyond mere romance. She weaves with depth the clash of the warm, agrarian South and the cold, industrialized North, the sharp conflicts of labor and capital, of class. The process by which Margaret and Thornton shatter their own firm prejudices and discover the true worth of the other shows us, who live in a divided world, the powerful possibility of reconciliation and solidarity.
