All through this novel I felt a vertigo, as if infected by the suffocating heat of the gambling table and the protagonist's madness. Because Dostoevsky himself wrote it in a single month, consumed by gambling and hounded by creditors, it holds, with skin-crawling vividness, the morbid obsession and self-destructive impulse of humankind. The frailty of a person who knows by reason that he must stop, yet leans on the illusion of fate and plunges into the abyss. It is the very summit of sharp psychological portrayal, showing how blind desire gnaws away at the soul.
