When I first read this story by Yeonam Park Ji-won, I felt a strange thrill at the scene where Master Heo, who had done nothing but read for ten years, throws open his door and walks out. In a single stroke he corners the markets and mocks the contradictions of his society. Yet what truly pierced me was the ending, in which he abandons all his wealth and vanishes without a trace.
