陽 reading
Origin of the character
'陽' is a phono-semantic compound combining '阜' (a mound or hill) with '昜' (brightness), the latter depicting the sun (日) rising above the horizon (一) to suggest a bright, radiant state. '陽' therefore denotes the sunlit, bright side of a hill—the sunny slope. From this it expanded to encompass a range of positive meanings: brightness, warmth, the masculine, and activity.
How it is built
阜 (hill) + 昜 (brightness) = 陽 (sunlight)
'陽' depicts one face of a hill catching the sunlight and appearing bright. In contrast, '陰' (shade) combines '阜' (hill) with '今' to denote the shaded face of a hill, so that '陽' and '陰' form a pair of opposing concepts. The element '昜' also appears in characters such as '場' (open ground) and '揚' (to raise, to scatter), where it extends the sense of being 'bright and manifest.'

After writing
In the doctrine of yin-yang and the five phases, central to Taoist thought, yang symbolizes heaven, brightness, activity, the masculine, daytime, and generation. All natural phenomena are explained through the harmony and transformation of yin and yang, with yang regarded as the source of all life and the engine of movement. The Tao Te Ching states that all things carry yin on their backs and embrace yang, stressing the mutually complementary relationship of the two.Taoism
