DAY 48

Conquer Yourself, Not a Thousand Foes

Dhammapada, Ch.8 (The Thousands), v.103
기원전 3세기 결집
ORIGINAL
Yo sahassaṃ sahassena, saṅgāme mānuse jine; ekañca jeyyamattānaṃ, sa ve saṅgāmajuttamo.
📜 THE VERSE

Though one conquer a thousand times a thousand in battle, the one who conquers oneself is the greatest victor.

❓ TODAY'S QUESTION

The opponent I truly need to defeat today — is it outside, or within?

📝Reflection

Conquering an outer enemy is glamorous — it earns applause, it goes on record. So we always fight outward: better grades, higher rank, more recognition. But this verse points to the hardest enemy of all: oneself. Holding back when you want to rage, beginning when you want to delay, admitting when you want to excuse. These small battles win no audience and no trophy. Yet one inner victory changes a person more than a thousand outer ones. An outer enemy defeated only appears again, but one who has conquered himself does not collapse anywhere. The quietest battle is the greatest victory.
