DAY 62

Give Up Anger, Give Up Pride

Dhammapada, Ch.17 (Anger), v.221
기원전 3세기 결집
ORIGINAL
Kodhaṃ jahe vippajaheyya mānaṃ, saṃyojanaṃ sabbamatikkameyya; taṃ nāmarūpasmiṃ asajjamānaṃ.
📜 THE VERSE

Give up anger, abandon pride, transcend every fetter. Suffering does not follow one who clings to nothing.

❓ TODAY'S QUESTION

Beneath my anger, is there a hidden pride that refuses to be wounded?

📝Reflection

Placing anger and pride side by side is this verse's insight. The two in fact spring from one root. Look deeply into why we get angry, and beneath it usually lies the pride of "I was disrespected," "my dignity was hurt." Under the feeling that someone treated us carelessly sits the thought "I am not a person to be treated like that." So to master anger, one must first see the pride beneath it. Know that your ego need not be so large, and being touched hurts less. A large ego is greatly wounded even by a small insult. One whose ego is light is not shaken by ordinary things. The deepest way to reduce anger is to reduce the pride you feel you must defend.

🌱Apply It Today

When anger rises today, ask once: "is what's wounded a fact, or my pride?" The moment you see the answer, the flame drops a notch.
