DAY 161

The Highest Truth Has No High or Low

Diamond Sutra, Ch.23 (A Pure Mind Doing Good)
현장(玄奘) 한역 648년
ORIGINAL
是法平等 無有高下 是名阿耨多羅三藐三菩提
📜 THE VERSE

The truth is inherently level, with no high or low. That is why it is called supreme awakening. The same ground lies beneath everyone's feet.

❓ TODAY'S QUESTION

Busy ranking people high and low, have I forgotten we all stand on the same ground?

📝Reflection

It is a deep paradox that "supreme awakening," the seemingly highest state, is explained precisely by the equality of "no high or low." It means the highest truth is open equally to all. We endlessly form rankings — by schooling, wealth, title. On that line we cower looking up and swagger looking down. But this verse reveals the line itself as an illusion drawn by the mind. Before truth, before death, before a handful of sunlight, people are inherently equal. A high seat brings no more happiness, a low one no less worth. A mind that knows this equality is neither servile nor arrogant. It sees one who stands on the same ground simply as a person.
