DAY 157

To Help Without the Thought of Having Helped

Diamond Sutra, Ch.3
현장(玄奘) 한역 648년
ORIGINAL
滅度無量衆生 實無衆生得滅度者
📜 THE VERSE

Though one helps countless beings, there is no thought that "I" saved anyone. In that absence, the help becomes purest.

❓ TODAY'S QUESTION

Is the superior thought "I am helping someone" itself tainting the help?

📝Reflection

Even helping has a trap. The instant "I am helping you" enters, a height appears between helper and helped. That height shrinks the receiver and puffs up the giver. So this verse is fearfully precise: help countless beings, yet without even the thought of having helped. It does not mean blur the help, but subtract "I" from it. As sunlight does not think "I shine on you," as rain does not boast "I wet you." The greatest help simply flows out, without even the awareness of helping. Only when the receiver can receive without feeling indebted is the help complete.

🌱Apply It Today

When you help someone today, subtract the thought "I am helping" and offer it as plainly as sunlight. The receiver's shoulders grow lighter.
