DAY 159

A Heart That Gives Without Clinging Is Wide as Space

Diamond Sutra, Ch.4
현장(玄奘) 한역 648년
ORIGINAL
不住相布施 其福德 不可思量
📜 THE VERSE

Give without clinging to appearances, and the blessing is wide as empty space, beyond measure. Nothing is as vast as a heart that wants nothing back.

❓ TODAY'S QUESTION

Is my heart always pinched narrow because it keeps wanting something back?

📝Reflection

A wanting heart is always narrow. The moment it expects something, the heart focuses on that one thing and shrinks. The calculation "I did this, so that should come back" squeezes it tight. By contrast, a heart that simply gives, wanting nothing, has no end. This verse calling that blessing "wide as space, beyond measure" is no exaggeration. Space, being empty, can hold anything, and being bound nowhere, is widest of all. The heart is the same: empty it of return and it widens; empty it of expectation and it grows free. The richest heart is not the one that has the most, but the one that wants the least.
