TODAY · DAY 2

A Clear Mind, a Following Shadow

Dhammapada, Ch.1 (Twin Verses), v.2

ORIGINAL
Manasā ce pasannena, bhāsati vā karoti vā; tato naṃ sukham anveti, chāyāva anapāyinī.
📜 THE VERSE

If one speaks or acts with a clear mind, happiness follows — like a shadow that never leaves.

❓ TODAY'S QUESTION

Am I speaking from a clouded mind right now, or a clear one?

📝Reflection

A shadow never leaves the body so long as there is light. The happiness in this verse is the same — not a reward arriving from afar, but the shade that naturally falls where a clear mind has passed. I was long mistaken: I thought a clear mind would come once good things happened. The order was reversed. The mind must clear first, and then the same events arrive as good. Not mixing a clouded mind into today's one word, today's one act — that is the surest savings account of happiness.

🌱Apply It Today

Just before you speak to someone today, pause for one breath: "Is my mind clear right now?" If it is clouded, it is fine to delay that one remark by an hour.
