For a Pure World, First a Pure Mind
If you wish for a pure world, first purify your mind. As the mind grows clear, the world appears clear. The first step in changing the world is the mind.
Do I blame the world for being dark, while neglecting the darkness of my own mind?
📝Reflection
The Vimalakirti Sutra makes a powerful declaration from its very start: "When the mind is pure, the world is pure." It says that before straining to change the world, look first at the mind that sees that world. Walking the same street, one with a dark mind finds everything irritating, while one with a clear mind sees small kindnesses and sunlight. The world is one, yet through the lens of mind, an entirely different world unfolds. This does not mean turn away from the world's problems. Rather, the more one truly wishes to change the world, the more one must first clear one's own mind. To change the world with a mind full of anger breeds more anger. Only action from a clear mind makes clear change. If the world feels dark, part of that darkness may be dust on the window of my own mind.
🌱Apply It Today
When the world or someone feels frustrating today, ask once: "how much of this frustration is the state of my own mind?"
This verse is read as universal humanistic wisdom, not religion — no faith is promoted, and the reflection is 100% original ONGO content.
