The Gate of Clouds
"What is the word that transcends even Buddha and patriarchs?" Yunmen answered: "A cake." To a question of grandeur, the humblest reply.
Believing life's greatest answer lies in something grand, am I missing the worth of the humble thing in my hand?
📝Reflection
A practitioner posed the grandest question to Yunmen: what is the ultimate word that transcends even the Buddha and the patriarchs? Yunmen answered: "A cake." To a question after the edge of the cosmos, he replied with a street snack. It seems a deflating answer, yet Yunmen's blade is right there. The grand mind straining to surpass even Buddha and teacher in search of the ultimate — Yunmen sets it on the ground with a single cake. The highest truth lies within the lowliest, humblest thing. We seek great answers only in great places. But what actually saves a life is one warm cake, one touch of someone's hand, one ordinary meal. Yunmen asks: while claiming to surpass the Buddha, are you even properly tasting the one cake before your eyes? The very craving for grandeur veils the humble now.
🌱Apply It Today
