DAY 206

The Lamp and Its Light Are Not Two

📜 THE VERSE

Where there is a lamp there is light; without the lamp, darkness. The lamp is the body of light; the light is the lamp's working.

❓ TODAY'S QUESTION

Am I splitting the mind from its actions, hunting for essence and use as two things?

📝Reflection

Lamp and light have two names but cannot be parted. Light the lamp and the light is already there; to put out the light you must put out the lamp. With this simple image, Huineng reveals a secret of the mind: a clear mind (the body) and wise action (its working) are not separate. We keep sequencing it — "first become a clean person, then do good." But like the lamp, when the mind is bright, action is bright of itself; no separate strain needed. If good action won't come, don't flog the action — inspect the lamp itself, the brightness of the mind. When the essence is bright, the working follows.

🌱Apply It Today

When good action won't come today, instead of flogging yourself, look inward first: "Is the lamp of my mind dimmed right now?"
