Yunmen said the mountains, rivers, and earth lie fully exposed. The teaching is not hidden in secret documents or deep mountain caves. The mountains we see daily, the flowing rivers, the ground beneath our feet — all that ordinary scenery already spreads the greatest teaching plainly before us. We believe truth must be difficult and secret to be real, so we find the easy and the near trivial. Yunmen points the opposite way: the deepest truth is so fully exposed that we fail to see it. The unmoving weight of the mountains, the unceasing flow of the river, the generosity of the earth bearing all things — there, all the wisdom of life is already written. We simply fail to see it because we see it too often.
