A Living Dog Is Better Than a Dead Lion

Ecclesiastes 9:4

ORIGINAL
כִּי־לְכֶלֶב חַי הוּא טוֹב מִן־הָאַרְיֵה הַמֵּת
📜 THE VERSE

Anyone who is among the living has hope — a living dog is better than a dead lion.

❓ TODAY'S QUESTION

How often do I forget the staggering fact that I am still alive and breathing?

📝Reflection

The dog was a despised beast in scripture, the lion the king of beasts. Yet a living dog is better than a dead lion. This rough image says something simple — being alive is itself the greatest asset. More possibility lies in ordinary me breathing today than in the glory of a dead hero. We take being alive for granted and count only what we lack. But that today I can open my eyes, eat, and love someone — this is already a miracle. Alongside the Buddha's saying that one awakened day beats a hundred years lived in vain, this ancient dog barks in agreement.

🌱Apply It Today

Count the very act of waking this morning as thanks: "I am still alive, and so today lies open."
