溫故知新 Old wisdom, today’s insight — ONGO
If You Cannot Bridle the Tongue
If anyone thinks himself devout yet does not bridle his tongue, his devotion is worthless.
James likens the tongue to the bit placed in a horse's mouth.
Do I appear upright on the outside while cutting someone with my words?
📝Reflection
James likens the tongue to the bit placed in a horse's mouth. However good the heart, if the tongue runs wild, the whole heart collapses. I have often seen the devout-looking person turn and slander another — and I was no exception. Speech is the window that reveals a person's true state. Mastering the heart is decided, in the end, by whether one can master the tongue. As a single bit turns a wild horse, the strength to hold back one word turns a person around.
🌱Apply It Today
When the urge to speak ill of someone arises today, pause for a single breath before the words leave your mouth.
This verse is read as universal humanistic wisdom, not religion — no faith is promoted, and the reflection is 100% original ONGO content.
