DAY 17

Do Not Quarrel Without Cause

Proverbs 3:30
기원전 10~4세기
ORIGINAL
אַל־תָּרִיב עִם־אָדָם חִנָּם
📜 THE VERSE

Do not quarrel with anyone without cause, when they have done you no harm.

❓ TODAY'S QUESTION

How often have I created a fight and jumped into it, over things that had nothing to do with me?

📝Reflection

Much of the quarreling we do happens not because it is necessary but simply because we do not want to lose. This verse pierces that truth with two words: 'without cause.' The other person has not harmed us, yet how many fights we pick out of pride, out of boredom, out of habit. Laozi said that because he did not contend, no one under heaven could contend with him. To avoid a fight is not weakness but the strength of knowing what is truly worth fighting for. The one who steps back from a battle he need not win is the one who guards the greater thing.
