A sailor watches the North Star in a storm. The star does not stop the ship from rocking; it gives direction to a rocking ship. This poet said that with one steady center kept always before you, you may sway but you will not collapse. I drifted a long time without direction — not because the waves were strong, but because I had chosen no star to steer by. Whatever that star is — a principle, a beloved person, a promise you made yourself — the one who keeps a single thing before them crosses the same storm differently.
