Kant never left the city of his birth, Königsberg, his whole life. He walked at the same hour every day, and they say his neighbors set their clocks by it. From the small routines of a small town, he wrote a book that overturned the entire history of human thought. The single question he left us — "Could the action you are about to take become a law for everyone?" — is no grand ethics. It is simply a question to put to yourself once, before any small decision today. That question lifts us up to a higher rank of human being.
