When I first saw Chusa's calligraphy as a child, I did not feel it was good handwriting. It was too rough, too far from neat. But the older I grow, the more I understand: what he reached in a lifetime was not ornament but the solidity that comes only after passing all the way through ornament. Chusa's jol — a simplicity almost like foolishness — is not lazy simplicity but the kind reached only after pouring out an entire life. If we too dug one thing deeper instead of straining each day to show more, perhaps one of Chusa's brushstrokes would rise up in its place.
