산수도(山水圖)
🖼 ONE LINE FROM THIS PAINTING

"What does a landscape drawn with bold brushwork demand of the one who looks?"

📝ONGO's Reflection

This landscape by Kano Sansetsu raised mountain and rock with bold, forceful brushwork. It was drawn in the tradition of the Japanese Kano school, yet the heart that stands before the majesty of nature is much the same anywhere. I see here the restraint that expresses strength. A vigorous line does not come from wielding the brush carelessly. A bold stroke lives only in a hand that knows where to stop and where to press. Strength is not pouring out roughly but the showing of restrained force gathered to a single point. True strength is the strength that knows how to be controlled.
