황제와 두 시종
🖼 ONE LINE FROM THIS PAINTING

"Who stands beside the person in the high place?"

📝ONGO's Reflection

This is an anonymous Chinese painting in which two attendants are set beside the emperor. The formality and hierarchy of Chinese figure painting are held in it, yet the meaning the scene conveys is the same in any land. In this painting I see the meaning of the place that keeps watch at one's side. The center of the frame is the emperor, yet without the attendants surrounding him, even that authority cannot stand alone. A high place is never made by oneself. Beside one shining person there are always those who quietly keep their place at his side. That place is precious all the same.
