Five Rulers at New Year's Receptio

🖼 ONE LINE FROM THIS PAINTING

"What did a formal New Year's audience mean to convey?"

📝ONGO's Reflection

This painting holds a scene of ruler and ministers holding a formal audience to greet the New Year. It came from the tradition of Chinese court painting, yet the heart that greets a year's beginning with care reaches anyone. I see here why ceremony is given to a beginning. The New Year's audience looks like cumbersome procedure, but its formality is a resolve not to begin the year carelessly. To open the start of anything without disorder is a sign of holding the thing precious. A heart that does not pass lightly over the beginning decides the weight of that whole year.
