This is a painting from the Ming dynasty by an unknown hand, holding a horse, a groom, and a falcon together. Human and beast keep each its own place within one scene and blend. Though it came from the tradition of Chinese painting, its structure carries anywhere. I see, in this scene, the harmony of differing things. The horse as a horse, the falcon as a falcon, the groom as a groom, each has its own station, and when each does its own work, one scene is completed. There is no need for all to be the same. When different roles keep their places and interlock, only then is a whole made entire.
