Content with What Comes, Beyond the Pairs of Opposites
Content with what chance brings, beyond the pairs of opposites, free of envy, alike in success and failure — such a one, whatever they do, is not bound.
Am I always thirsting for what is not in my hand, missing the gift of what has already come?
📝Reflection
In this verse I see the face of a calm freedom. To be content with what chance brings does not mean abandoning effort, but not thrashing against what will not go my way. When I step free of weighing good against bad and comparing myself with others, the mind grows light at last. Here Seneca's counsel to be content with what fortune gives meets the wisdom of 'be content within your lot.' When I tire from chasing what is not in my hand, I first reckon what has already come to me and recover the seat of contentment.
🌱Apply It Today
If your heart leans toward what you lack today, count three things that have already come to you and return to contentment.
This verse is read as universal humanistic wisdom, not religion — no faith is promoted, and the reflection is 100% original ONGO content.
