DAY 112

A Treatise of Human Nature

A Treatise of Human Nature
📌 ONE QUESTION FROM THE BOOK

Is reason truly the master that guides our lives, or is it merely a slave to our passions?

📝ONGO's Reflection

When I first met Hume's declaration that reason is the slave of the passions, my solid intellectual arrogance shattered to pieces. We believe we always make rational, reasonable judgments, but Hume points out that we in fact use reason merely as a tool to justify our desires and emotions. His sharp gaze, dissecting the deepest and most intimate place of human nature, strangely brings relief. For it gives me the courage to step out of the illusion of rationality and face our true selves.

"이성은 정념의 노예이며, 또 오직 노예이어야만 한다."

🌱Apply It Today

Look back on an important decision you made today. Write honestly whether it was the result of pure logic, or whether your heart had already leaned and you simply attached reasons afterward.
