Following the wistful romance of a nymph and a king in the lush forests of ancient India, I was wholly swept up in Kalidasa's graceful, sensuous verse. Through the motif of a lost ring, he portrays the cruel curse of fate and the loss of memory, and yet the way his narrative ultimately proves love's power to be restored is profoundly beautiful. It is the most dazzling jewel of Eastern literature, where nature, humanity, and myth melt into one. It makes me want to believe in a pull of the soul that, even when forgotten, cannot help but be recognized again.
