When I first read the manifesto-like preface to this collection, the definition of poetry as "the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings" lodged deep in my heart. The courage of these poets, who boldly cast off the pedantic language of aristocrats to sing of nature and humanity in the plain speech of country folk, broke open the radiant dawn of Romanticism. To me, crushed beneath tangled thoughts, this book offered the pure consolation of nature.
