Reading this book, woven from the fragments of Pascal, the genius mathematician, I felt a deep kinship with the contradictory nature of being human. We are as frail as a reed that a single drop of water could kill, yet we possess the power of thought that can embrace the whole universe. Pascal sees through both our wretchedness and our greatness at once. Whenever I grow despondent at the fleetingness of my existence, I open this book. It reminds me that the mere fact that we can think makes us anything but weightless.
