When I reopened as an adult this book I had known only as a children's tale, I felt myself cut by the sharpness of Swift's satire. From the land of giants and the land of the tiny to the country of rational horses, the vanity and greed of human society, mirrored through Gulliver's eyes, are strange and shameful. The book teaches thoroughly how to make our familiar world strange—to ask whether the reason I trust so firmly is truly complete. It is the finest intellectual adventure for shattering prejudice.
