The Book of Rites
How do the minor courtesies and formalities we observe refine our inner selves and sustain society?
📝ONGO's Reflection
I, who had regarded form as nothing but tiresome empty ceremony, discovered through this book the true meaning of li (ritual propriety). The Book of Rites (Liji) is no mere catalog of rules; it explains in fine detail how respect for others and a heart that disciplines the self come to express themselves in outward conduct. The ancient sages' insight, that when outward courtesy crumbles inner morality crumbles with it, strikes ever deeper today. It is a philosophy of great dignity, awakening us to the importance of conduct as the vessel that holds the unseen heart.
"Pride should not be allowed to grow; the desires should not be indulged; the will should not be gratified to the full."Confucius and Disciples (compilers), The Book of Rites
"오만함은 자라게 해서는 안 되며, 욕망은 방종에 이르게 해서는 안 되고, 뜻은 지나치게 채워서는 안 된다."
