When I came upon the notion of "conspicuous consumption" that this book raises, I felt an embarrassment as if someone were leafing through the shameful receipts in my wallet. Veblen sharply criticizes the grotesque structure in which, in a capitalist society, wealth becomes honor and the ability to waste money on useless things proves one's status. It is a book that makes us realize our desires are in fact thoroughly engineered by society.
