Treatise on Tolerance
Can I genuinely respect others who hold beliefs profoundly different from my own?
📝ONGO's Reflection
Reading Voltaire's account of the Jean Calas affair, a man destroyed by religious frenzy, I felt anew the weight of the word "tolerance." With nothing but his pen, he fought against the intolerance and blind faith of his age. To loathe another simply because they hold a different thought, a different belief, is no relic of the past. Voltaire's sharp satire and his burning cry point out clearly where we must halt our hatred of others and where the seat of reason we are bound to defend truly lies.
"I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it."Voltaire, Treatise on Tolerance
"나는 당신의 의견에 반대하지만, 당신이 그 의견을 말할 권리를 위해 죽을 때까지 싸울 것이다."
