This verse says the opposite: at the moment the first resolve arises, the essence is already wholly present. As in a thousand-mile road, the whole direction is contained within the first step. Facing something endless and frightening, this is not consolation but a statement of fact. The truly hard part is not finishing but forming the first resolve. The moment you do that hardest thing, you are, in essence, already standing there.
