📜 THE VERSE

If by giving up a small pleasure one sees a greater happiness, the wise let go of the small, looking toward the great.

❓ TODAY'S QUESTION

Is a small pleasure of the moment blocking the road to a greater happiness?

📝Reflection

This verse names the essence of a choice we face every day. Small pleasure and great happiness often collide. The small ease of lying down to rest now, versus the greater health gained by exercise. The small relief of getting angry now, versus the greater relationship kept by holding back. The trouble is that small pleasure is vivid right before us, while great happiness is far and faint. So our hand keeps reaching for the near, small thing. Wisdom is the power to render that far, faint great happiness vivid. Once it is seen, letting go of the small pleasure becomes not a sacrifice but a trade — a shrewd trade, releasing the lesser good for the greater. Restraint is not reducing pleasure but transferring to a larger one.

🌱Apply It Today

Before a small pleasure today — a snack, a delay, venting — vividly picture "what greater thing comes if I let this go?" and then decide.
