DAY 4

Hatred Is Never Quenched by Hatred

Dhammapada, Ch.1 (Twin Verses), v.5
기원전 3세기 결집
ORIGINAL
Na hi verena verāni, sammantīdha kudācanaṃ; averena ca sammanti, esa dhammo sanantano.
📜 THE VERSE

In this world, hatred is never quenched by hatred. It is quenched only by non-hatred. This is an eternal law.

❓ TODAY'S QUESTION

That feud I met hatred with hatred — is it ending, or only growing?

📝Reflection

No one pours oil on a fire to put it out. Yet in matters of the heart, we all do exactly that. Repaying hatred with hatred feels relieving for a moment, but the flames leap higher. To read this verse as a moral lecture to "be good" is to read only half. It is closer to a law of physics than to morality. The only thing that can break a chain of resentment is one person who refuses to attach the next link. To be that one person is not weakness — it is what only the strongest can do.

🌱Apply It Today

When a sharp word tempts you to sharpen your own today, pause one second and ask: "Could I be the one who breaks the chain here?"
