📜 THE VERSE

Medicine and sickness heal each other. The whole earth is medicine — then what are you yourself?

❓ TODAY'S QUESTION

This thing I call my "problem" — could it at the same time be the medicine that grows me?

📝Reflection

Yunmen said medicine and sickness heal each other. Sickness gives medicine its meaning; medicine subdues sickness. The two are not enemies but a pair. Further, he said "the whole earth is medicine" — everything in the world becomes medicine depending on how it is used. We split life into medicine and sickness, good events and bad. We welcome the good and push the bad away. But Yunmen blurs that border: the very "sickness" troubling me now may in truth be the medicine that tempers me. Failure teaches humility; loss teaches love. Which is sickness and which is medicine, we know only once it is over. So do not hastily condemn present pain as nothing but sickness — that is Yunmen's deep consolation.
