Do Not Seek Mind with Mind
If you use the mind to search for the mind, you will never find it.
In straining so hard to find calm, is the straining itself pushing calm away?
📝Reflection
The eye cannot see itself; a blade cannot cut itself. Huangbo applies the same paradox to the mind: use the mind to seek the mind and you'll never find it. This is a deep insight. We often fret to "find" calm. Even while meditating, we grow more anxious — "why am I still not calm?" That seeking, that straining mind is itself already scattering the calm. It is like trying to sleep: the harder you try, the wider awake you become. True calm comes not from grasping but from letting go. The very moment you stop searching, the mind that was always there at last shows itself.
🌱Apply It Today
When straining for calm only makes you anxious today, give up the search for a moment, say "this is fine as it is," and just follow the breath. Letting go lightens you.
